Section 1

The first section covers the Weald and Downland area of South East England.
The walk started from Eastbourne and followed the South Downs west, onto Beachy Head, then via Alfriston and along as far as Amberley. Here I left the Downs and headed north across the Weald, through Pulborough to reach the North Downs at Guildford. I then followed the North Downs west as far as Seale, where I again turned north and entered the second stage of the walk.
The predominant building material on the early stages of this section of the walk was flint, abstracted from the chalk. Later, as I crossed the Weald, the early buildings were all of timber-frame, with brick used extensively on the later structures.
